On December 10, 2005 MediaGear announced a new portable and affordable flash card reader, the 10 in 4 USB2.0 Reader / Writer. In the following review, we'll take a look at MediaGear's new product addition.

Please visit MediaGear's website for many other products, which include a rather impressive selection of Flash Drives, portable storage devices of various shapes and offerings, CD and DVD writers, and more.

MediaGear 10 in 4 USB2.0 Reader / Writer

MediaGear's 10 in 4 is capable of copying 10 different media card formats with the simple push of a button. Two additional USB2.0 ports are featured on the 10in4, which alleviates a problem some people have with acquiring new peropheral devices: USB ports. I still have yet to understand why most manufacturers only make a 4-port USB card, when the average computer user has two-times as many devices. I guess we'll leave that rant to another article but suffice it to say, MediaGear's additional offering of 2 extra USB2.0 ports on a media R/W (reader / writer), and selling it for around $15 at your local store, is certainly worthy of mentioning. As if that wasn't enough, MediaGear offers a separate AC adapter for using higher-powered USB2.0 devices. In most cases you won't need an AC adapter, but if you will be using all the ports on the reader in addition to using it for reading and writing data of the media cards, it would be suggested to purchase the additional adapter.

10 Media Formats Supported

The 10 in 4 supports no less than 10 media formats:

  • Compact Flash Type I
  • Compact Flash Type II
  • Microdrive
  • Memory Stick
  • Memory Stick Pro
  • Memory Duo
  • SmartMedia
  • Secure Digital
  • MultiMediaCard
  • xD-Picture Card
It's nice to see this MediaGear product supporting formats which are basically non-existent today (such as SmartMedia) and other formats which are very proprietary to their cameras (such as Olympus and Fujifilm). As a photographer or even the casual user, you may come across a situation where you might use a friend's camera, and they have a media card which you haven't seen being used in years. Backwards-compatible readers are definitely a wise manufacturing decision, as well as an informed purchasing decision.
