So, I was trying to find a good chocolate chip cookie recipe for this holiday season. Contrary to what everyone may tell you, finding that special chocolate chip cookie recipe is not easy to find. I'm not really sure how it happened in the Search Engine Universe, but a game called Cookie Clicker caught my eye as I was formulating a cookie idea. I only gave the game a few mouse clicks of my time...

...and that was 6 days ago. Since then, I've given the game 40,522 physical mouse clicks. Yes, you can find automated programs that'll do the clicking for you, but I consider that cheating, and it takes all the fun out of this very addictive creation by Orteil.

What I find interesting, is I've given more time to Cookie Clicker — a free online game — than I have to some very not-so-fun games which set me back about $60 a piece. Thinking about it right now, I've been spent thousands of dollars on PC games over the years, but something about Cookie Clicker keeps me coming back.

Maybe it's because it's just so simple. Maybe it's because I love chocolate chips.

The Game

Cookie Clicker is pretty basic: Get as much cookies as possible (i.e., use your mouse to click-click-click) in order to purchase upgrades with your banked cookies. Currently, there are 10 items to upgrade:

  • Cursor
  • Grandma
  • Farm
  • Factory
  • Mine
  • Shipment
  • Alchemy lab
  • Portal
  • Time machine
  • Antimatter condenser
The Grandmas

You might be wondering about the accumulation of Grandma bakers, but eventually, the Grandmas take on a completely different meaning. Once you decide to upgrade with the One Mind item, the background of Cookie Clicker changes, and you can experience a downturn in cookie production. However, this can be offset with a potential to earn many times more cookies. Overall, it's best to take a chance!

Plugins

Cookie Clicker is rather easy to play, and I really do not encourage cheating with the various automated mouse clicking programs available, but what I do recommend, is a Javascript called Cookie Monster. This very handy and short script, will display a little more info on the game, as well as let you know when a Golden Cookie (or a Red Cookie if you've upgraded your Grannies) will be appearing, and will display a countdown of how much time is remaining for mouse-clicking Frenzies. In order to use this script, you'll need one of a few Javascript Plugins. Since I use Google Chrome almost exclusively, I use Tampermonkey.

Why Is Cookie Clicker So Addicting?

One of the reasons why I think Cookie Clicker is so addicting and fun, is because of the simple tasks of purchasing upgrades, and the graphics which remind me of games I played in the 80's.

More To Come...

I'll be taking a closer look at the item upgrades and achievements in the near future, so check back here frequently. Cookie Clicker has only been online for a few months, and I would expect some really fun and exciting additions soon!

Cookie Clicker v.1.0393

Cookie Clicker has been updated with several new cookies and a major new character...the Wrinkler (more about these gross things later).

Cookie Clicker Persistent MemoryPersistent Memory is one of the upgrades I noticed. With this upgrade, research is 10 times quicker than before.

The Wrinklers
Cookie Clicker v.1.0393; November 2, 2013

Cookie Clicker WrinklersWith the "393" version of Cookie Clicker announced around the end of October, you have little gross worm thingies called Wrinklers, which take bites out of your cookie making potential (Cps).

Initially, I thought this was a bad thing, but I accidentally left the game running in angered mode, and when I came back a few hours later...I had 10 wrinklers munching, and I popped all of them, resulting in some very nice bonus cookie numbers.

If you're trying to score some good numbers so you can get Heavenly Chips on your next reset, I highly suggest you let these wrinklers munch on your cookie (ok, that's sounds weird) for as long as possible — say several hours — which will result in getting back all the cookies lost, plus about 10% more. This seems to be a much more easier way to gain cookies than having to consistently click on a Golden Cookie.

Additionally, if you're even lazier with your mouse, and don't want to click all of those things, you can simply click on Elder Pledge, popping all 10 of them and displaying the individual cookies obtained.
