Just in case some of you are reading this, I certainly didn't just wake up one day and say, Hey, let's run a marathon! I am impulsive (if you call waking up at 2am and having a Taco Bell craving), but this wasn't one of those impulsive moments. It's been just about one year since my initial weight of 305lbs, and within a year, I've lost around 90lbs. This past year I've learned so much. Talked to so many people regarding weight loss. What worked. What didn't work. What sort of worked. I had something valuable to take from every conversation I had, and this has formulated my next phase in my spiritual quest: finishing a marathon. This micro-website will be dedicated to my experiences as I train for the 39th Portland Marathon. Will I finish the marathon in 2010? I suppose you'll just have to follow along with me and check in from time to time...

January 2, 2010; Saturday

8:16am So this morning, I'm hitting the gym. Maybe even hit the gym again tonight and take tomorrow off and do a longer distance on Monday. My ankles are certainly too sore to do a long distance. I could do a 925 but won't even bother. I'd rather take this time to build muscle in my legs and reduce waist size.

There are some new machines at the 24-Hr Fitness location I go to and I'll talk more about those machines later.

12:15pm Spent 2.75 hours at the gym. I'm wondering if I'll be able to do a 1950 tomorrow. We'll have to see. What is beneficial to a long gym workout, is I can do rather long stretch of leg and lower-leg exercises without straining my ankles too much. But tomorrow I'll be putting this to the test.

January 1, 2010; Friday

5:10pm Did a 1400 with about 9 miles of jogging. This wasn't a good idea, and I planned to only do a mild 925, but my legs got the best of me and I decided to go a little farther. Problem? Well, I seriously doubt my ankles will be up to doing a 1950 tomorrow.

Oh, and HAPPY NEW YEAR. This is the time to start something new and begin to re-define yourself. You can do it at any age, at any place you are currently at...

December 31, 2009; Thursday

9:23am Not sure what to do today (I'm off work until next week!). I may try to do a reduced morning 925 (6.8 miles or so), which will be only a 2-hour walk and no jogging because of the roads around here, and then go to the gym for a full 2.5 hours or more later in the day.

5:19pm Went to the gym for 2.5 hours. Might try a walk tonight and even a complete 925 if the roads are clearing up. Problem now is rain. I don't like getting wet. At least in 40-degree weather, anyway.

December 30, 2009; Wednesday

10:30pm Only did an hour at the gym tonight due to it closing early for renovations and it's a little dangerous attempting to go for a jog as an alternative because of the surprise snowstorm we had Tuesday night, which is leaving snow on the sidewalks. I concentrated exclusively on my legs, which meant the usual three machines.

December 29, 2009; Tuesday

9:00pm Nothing happened tonight (I'm writing this a day later as I didn't make it home and had to stay the night at a co-worker's house). A surprise snowstorm hit the Portland area and locked-down the entire city. Over 1,000 vehicles left stranded and I've never seen such stupidity and rudeness on Portland's roads. I'd like to give a hint to motorists who decide to block intersections: you will delay your destination even more. When you decide to jump a red light, you prevent the opposing traffic from moving, which results in your own traffic lane being delayed further. Grow a brain. Be courteous and chill out.

December 28, 2009; Monday

10:10pm I did about 2.5 hours at the gym with an increase in the tri-machine workout. I'm on the Stairmaster for an additional 5mins, as well as an added 5mins or more on the CrossRamp. I'll probably increase the time on the upright bike, too.

December 27, 2009; Sunday

9:02am Heading out for an 1875. I packed 9 chocolate-covered almonds (fairly large almonds with a generous amount of HFCS-free chocolate) I purchased from a grocery chain called Whole Foods. Normally $11.99 but they were only $5.99 as they were nearing the expiration date in about a few weeks. Absolutely wonderful place to shop for the better side of nutrition. Of course, I can barely afford shopping there, but that's another issue. Maybe they should call the place Whole Paycheck. Because it sure feels like they take most of it.

We'll see how this goes today. I've stretched a good amount this morning. I really hate stretching. I just like to GO. One of the disciplines I've had to bite my tongue over is stretching. I would have loved to try out my GU Chomps...but those suckers are two weeks away from getting here! #$%!! F*&*!

On a slightly political note, who the hell are lawmakers to say Jersey Shore should be cancelled from MTV. This is THE UNITED STATES. We make decisions based on a majority of opinions from a collective group of free-thinking citizens. If you don't like the status quo...then get enough support to change the way things are instead of strong-arming a television network. Lawmakers are far from representing Americans these days. They represent a small group of financially strong lobbyists. If the show is so terrible...fellow citizens from Jersey and the surrounding area will watch something else. While I haven't personally followed Jersey Shore, I am all for the freedom of expression and allowing it go its natural course. Lawmakers and politicians are doing just the opposite. Do we have any politicians who have the balls to stand up for Jersey Shore based on freedom of expression? I sure haven't noticed many. Or any at the moment. What I suspect is MTV will probably have to pull Jersey Shore from the air, due to strong-arm political tactics.

Anyway, I'm just concentrating on destination this morning. Everything else is a blur. Speaking of, I apologize to an acquaintance who might have stopped their car and said "Hi!" Friday. I think I recognized you but by the time it registered in my brain...it was a few minutes after the fact. I'm in another place. Of course, if you do want to get my attention...just toss some organic chocolate-covered almonds out your window every few seconds and I'll follow you...

6:45pm Well, today I went rather far. 1950 is the new number. I'm suprised I made it back home in a vertical position. Just over 39,000 steps on my Omoron HJ-720ITC Pedometer. This is getting very close to the 50,000 estimated steps for the Portland Marathon.

December 26, 2009; Saturday

7:48am I decided to take it easy for another day due to my left ankle and even my right ankle acting outside the normal soreness. However, I did manage to do a nice workout at the gym for about 3 hours. I'm not sure what's going on with my ankles, but I think they may have been pushed a tad too far with the 1875 on the weekend and two 925's on the weekdays. Now that my legs are getting conditioned, it appears the weakest link is rearing up...my ankles.

On another note, I ordered some GU Chomps Packets (Strawberry) from Amazon and I look forward to discovering how they help me out during an 1875. Of course, this is THEE WORST time to order anything on the net, as my expected arrival is around January 8, 2010. That's two weeks from now! The reviews look pretty good, so I figure I'll try these out. GU Chomps are a new product from Sports Street, which have offered the GU Energy Gel for quite sometime now. There are many "sports gels" out there, but Sports Street appears to be the best. We'll find out in the coming weeks.

December 25, 2009; Friday

7:48am My left ankle is a little sore this morning, but it's not quite an injury per se, so I won't regard it as such. Today I'll be using it as little as possible.

December 24, 2009; Thursday

9:10pm Tonight I did another 925 with 6 miles of jogging. I did notice my left ankle was acting up, so I'm definitely taking it easy on Christmas tomorrow. Saturday I'd like to do another 1875, but I'm debating whether I should, given my left ankle. I just can't be 10 miles out with a problem.

December 23, 2009; Wednesday

Took the night off. I'm rather exhausted from yesterday.

December 22, 2009; Tuesday

Tonight I did a 925, which consisted of a 6 mile jog and 3 miles walking. In addition, I also went to the gym for 2.5 hours. This tired me out.
