Just in case some of you are reading this, I certainly didn't just wake up one day and say, Hey, let's run a marathon! I am impulsive (if you call waking up at 2am and having a Taco Bell craving), but this wasn't one of those impulsive moments. It's been just about one year since my initial weight of 305lbs, and within a year, I've lost around 90lbs. This past year I've learned so much. Talked to so many people regarding weight loss. What worked. What didn't work. What sort of worked. I had something valuable to take from every conversation I had, and this has formulated my next phase in my spiritual quest: finishing a marathon. This micro-website will be dedicated to my experiences as I train for the 39th Portland Marathon. Will I finish the marathon in 2010? I suppose you'll just have to follow along with me and check in from time to time...

December 21, 2009; Monday

12:42am 2 hours at the gym. Most of it was cardio and using the ab machines.

December 20, 2009; Sunday

7:00pm Did a 925 (about half was jogging as I was still recovering from yesterday) and 2.5 hours at the gym.

December 19, 2009; Saturday

4:45pm I did another 1875 today. Took about 15mins less than last week, and I actually had some energy left. My handy Omron Pedometer says I went 34,312 steps. Oh my.

December 18, 2009; Friday

Tonight I'm refraining from doing anything as I want to attempt another 1875.

December 17, 2009; Thursday

12:30am About 2.25 hours at the gym. I did more leg excercises, and the routine of doing the upright bike, Stairmaster, and CrossRamp, appear to be helping my legs getting back into shape. Eventually, I see myself dedicating 2 hours or more to just legs at the gym, so one night will be chest and arms, and the other will be legs.

December 13, 2009; Sunday

2.5 hours at the gym. I'm surprised I had this much energy due to yesterday, especially having little problems doing a 27-15-25 (upright bicycle, Stairmaster, CrossRamp).

Saw Harry tonight. He's still in the process of getting himself ready to jog with me. I told him no need to hurry but do it when he's ready. Small steps. Back in October 2008, I would have laughed my ass off (or some of it) if somebody from the future told me I'd be going 19 miles and still living aftwards. I told Harry to not concentrate on the now, but concentrate on what will be.

December 12, 2009; Saturday

Well, this is the day I went the farthest. We'll call it the 1875. And yes, it was about 19 miles. It took around 4.5 hours in total (I departed around noon and came back around 4:30pm), and I was walking 1 mile then jogging 1 mile on the way back. What really took the endurance out of me was getting the bright idea to jog up several stairs which are located on the south side of the Steel Bridge. By the time I got to the top, I was exhausted. I most certainly was NOT running around like Rocky aftwards, waving the hands and arms into the air. All I could think about was what the hell was I thinking.

After I got home, I immediately made the usual R4 drink. I could already feel it making my body feel better, because when I got home, my leg muscles were just screaming for some replenishment. This was around 5pm. At about 10 or 11pm, I was still feeling really drained, and so I made another drink. Normally, I wouldn't have done this, but I could tell my body needed it.

I've been dealing with issues over the past month. The biggest issue is whether I could really go farther than The Convention Center, because I've been mostly doing 925's and only a few long distance jogs. However, I pushed myself to almost absolute maximum today, and I discovered indeed...I can go farther. Blocking out doubts and wonderment is easier than it sounds. If your mind and body haven't experienced something, that something is blurry. The mind constantly inquires about accomplishment, and gets used to the comfort zone. What we don't know...we fear.

What's interesting, is today was only going to be 7 miles round trip at most. When I left home around noon, it was cool outside, and about 12:30pm, it was snowing a little. I decided to keep on going and fortunately, the weather warmed up to just above freezing so I could keep on going.

What turned out to be one of the shortest trips ever taken...ended up being the longest trip I ever took. Something to think about.

December 11, 2009; Friday

I didn't do anything tonight, but I will be embarking out tomorrow, regardless of the weather. Well, unless it's a sheet of ice as the weather people predict, but who knows. It's been damn cold here, in the teens, and the body just naturally and instictively doesn't want to go outside and play.

December 6, 2009; Sunday

Did a 925.

December 5, 2009; Saturday

12:35am Did 2.75 hours at the gym. Normally, I would have done a long distance run today but didn't feel like I could do it. My leg and ankle strengthening at the gym is taking a slight toll on my ankle for long distance runs. In the short-term, I might not be doing as many longer distances as I strengthen my ankles and legs, but we'll see.

December 4, 2009; Friday

3:30am Woke up rather late tonight, so I headed out to the gym at around midnight and stayed there till 3am. About 45mins of it was just shooting hoops after a workout. Felt kinda good.

December 3, 2009; Thursday

11:35pm I was going to go to the gym or do a 925 but woke up late and I am still tired from the previous night.

November 30, 2009; Monday

6:45pm I'm tired tonight so I'm just going take it easy.

November 29, 2009; Sunday

11:00pm Just thought I would mention adding a banana to the drink...tastes like crap and I don't recommend it.

8:24pm I did a 1300 this morning, which consisted of jogging over the St. Johns bridge and back, then walking the entire 925 route. Surprisingly, the earlier jog over the bridge wiped me out, but I kept on going for the rest of the way. When I got home, I was exhausted. Still am, actually. I had a R4 drink earlier and I'm doing another one tonight, and this time, I'm adding a banana to it.

Today was a nice day. Sunny and in the upper 40's I think. My mother (who lives in Arizona) is probably rolling on the floor laughing at the temps because where she is...it's around 80°.

I haven't seen one of my furry friends but saw him (her?) this afternoon. He's a totally black young cat who is as curious as ever. He didn't pay much attention to me this time because he preoccupied chasing after who knows what in the wild grass across the street which has a steep embankment (actually, it's more of a cliff come to think of it). I didn't want to disturb his concentration so I kept on going and simply nodded. He just gave a quick glance at me and then pounced and disappeared back into the tall grass.

8:01am I might do a 925 this morning.

November 28, 2009; Saturday

9:00pm Today I did a 1060, which is a modified 925 route but I swing out east a little more, then come back. It felt good and I picked up the pace a little, as well as raising my legs more when I jog. Seems a little trivial to note, but I can really feel the adjustment in my legs.
