Tonight I did absolutely nothing. I can certainly feel last night's jog, but I have to say, after taking the Endurox R4 drink last night, I'm not as sore.

I'm trying an athletic recovery supplement after I get home tonight. I happened to come across a nutritional store nearby and I stopped in to see what was available. A rather knowledgable saleswoman informed of Endurox R4, which is designed to help recovery from high intense and long duration exercises. She informed me a woman who was having difficulty get past 10 mile runs, tried this particular excercise supplement and increased her distance by more than 50% in a short period of time.
Which brings me to something I've been wondering all along. I'm depleating muscle and/or not recovering as properly as I should be after my long distance runs on the weekends.
Tonight was rather fun. It was somewhat warm (around 55+ degrees) and raining. There's something cleansing about running in the rain. Total distance was around 11 miles, and jogged about 7 of them, which is a little more than usual on a weekday.
November 2, 2009; Monday
Went to the gym for around 1.5 hours. Typical workout which consisted of light bench presses (I don't particularly want to develop a large chest but rather a more firm lean defined chest), ab machines, and lightweight free weights.

Oh yeah, I can feel winter coming. Today it was sunny, so I decided to ahead and wear shorts and--well, ok, basically a summer outfit. It was certainly cold once the sun went down. I'm surprised I didn't vibrate all the teeth out of my mouth before it was all over. In any case, I didn't go too far today. I could still feel myself being drained of energy, and the total distance was maybe around 7 miles. I jogged about half of those miles, picking up the pace a little, pushing myself.
October 31, 2009; Saturday
I went further overall on total distance. Jogging distance was about the same. I walked and jogged for around 238 minutes. That's just under 4 hours. Googling the distance, it looks like about 15.5 miles. Some people are reading this, probably gasping for air just comprehending the amount of time and distance, but anyone can do this as long as there is a small but gradual increase over time.
Today I took an apple with me (Honeycrisp apples are my favorite) and a small plastic bag with hickory smoked almonds. I think this really helped me in the last few miles of jogging and walking. I can foresee taking a similar type of meal with me when I do the marathon next year.
Come to think of it, I only need another 5 miles of path (which would be 10 miles total) to give myself an idea of a 26 mile exercise.
October 30, 2009; Friday
This was another Friday night where I'm refraining from any exercise, and instead, concentrating on what I'm going to do tomorrow.
October 29, 2009; Thursday
Tonight I did my usual "9.25", and jogged 3/4 of the way, which is about 6 miles.
October 28, 2009; Wednesday
Tonight was another gym routine with no jogging, but I did do 20mins on the upright bicycle and 20mins on the stairmaster. This thing kicks my ass, and it's really been helpful in shaping up my endurance for running. No other machine has done this, so for those reading this, start doing a stairmaster routine. You should see some significant results within a week or less of using it only 20mins a day.
October 27, 2009; Tuesday
Tonight I did a double-header. I did the "9.25" while jogging around 3/4 of it, then headed off to the gym for another 1.5 hours soon after. By the time I was finished tonight...well, I was finished. But it felt good.
October 26, 2009; Monday
Tonight I just did the gym routine. Maybe 2 hours worth. Still focusing on upper-body and it feels good.
October 25, 2009; Sunday
Today I went the "9.25" and came back home exhausted. I probably should have never gone this far so soon after yesterday's event. Next time, I'm gonna take it easy and not go so far within a 24-hour period.
I've been walking around the house, seeing Charly and then not. It's really weird not having her around.
October 24, 2009; Saturday
Today I went farther. This time I jogged around the Portland Rose Quarter with a Honeycrisp apple in my hand. There was an event going on and people seemed to stare at me...wondering just what the hell this guy was doing and why he had an apple in his hand.
I decided to take some food with me this time because of how far I'm beginning to go. Eventually, I'll try that Gu stuff, but for now, an apple seemed to suffice. About 221 minutes total elapsed. It's a good thing I took an apple. When I go farther, I'll probably have to take something else which has more than just carbs.
I also discovered I'm running out of path (and I think I've said this before). I may have to map a course which involves going across the river or something. The pedestrian walkways by the Rose Quarter are just insane and stupid. Not only are pedestrians confused, but so are motorists. Oh on, we can't have elevated walkways where the pedestrians can simply walk over the moving traffic. That would be too easy. Nah, let's cram pedestrians, motorists, and mass transit in one area.
Charly Is Gone
Today was also one of the more difficult times in my life. I had to euthanize Charly, who was my longtime companion for almost 18 years. She was with me ever since I was in college, and wherever and whenever I moved around the city of Portland...she was there with me in a U-Haul truck or car, getting the most out of the adventurous situation.
I probably will never forgive myself for making this decision. After I got home this morning, I looked at her, and I knew something had to be done. I personally don't like making decisions on another living being's life. This is a hardcore conflict I've always had. She could have lived another year possibly, but the quality of life for her would have made her suffer as well as myself watching her decline. Her weight was virtually nothing, and no matter how much she ate or how much protein I gave her, it just wouldn't make a difference. She was also urinating in places she never used to and wasn't sleeping in her usual areas, and this morning I found she urinated on her own sleeping area, which has never happened before.
I'm not sure if I'll ever have a pet again. Charly was like a daughter to me. She was everything. And I had to end her life. We had an amazing life together, and I will have so many great memories of her. Charly, I miss you.
