A new project has started, and this will involve processing new WU's (Work Units). Currently, if you are processing the Cancer and Smallpox WU's, you have about a 33% chance of getting the new "Rosetta" units. These new units do require more memory on your computer and take longer to actually process.

Finding Cures For Cancer

Ever wanted to help fight cancer, but just didn't know what to do? Or how to do it? www.grid.org is a place where you can download a client, and process very complex data, which is currently used for Smallpox, Anthrax, and Cancer research. A significant portion of research (and time), is conducting potential computational candidates for further steps in finding cures and vaccines. Only 10 years ago, computers would normally take years to finish these massive computations. Today, in a globally-connected computer world, millions of computers can be used to process this information in weeks or even days, depending on the requirements.

The download client is very unobtrusive when installed on your computer. I have personally had it running while using several other programs. Of course, your experience may vary, as I recommend at least 512MB of RAM.

Shown above is an example of a "Cancer Research Project, Phase II" unit being processed

Time Factors

Any new drug that is to become a viable cure for a disease or virus, must be tested. As stated above, a major part of testing, is the theoretical side. You have to sort through an almost infinite number of variables, to come up with potential qualifiers. This takes a lot of time. Computers have a natural ability to crunch numbers--that's what they're made for.

April 27, 2007

On Friday, April 27, 2007, Grid.org announced its client of running Working Units was complete. Unfortunately, the Grid.org announcement completing its project, was a complete surprise to participants. Only a short while earlier, a new and improved client was announced. There is a lot of mixed commentary and feelings regarding the organization of Grid.org, however, getting beyond the politics, there were some great achievements with the millions of computer owners who decided to run the client. Now, these members are going to various other clients which have a much more stable and firm presence in the crunching community.

Currently, DigitalDingus is using the BOINC client, which can manage and organize a wide variety of different clients. You can visit the latest DigitalDingus statistics on the DigitalDingus BOINC page. Currently, the Rosetta project is being used exclusively. DigitalDingus BOINC is also in the top 500 Top Teams.
