I was reading Thom's prediction and I think he's totally off-track on what Nikon is doing in this case. Yes, I know he writes Nikon books, but everyone can throw 16MB CF cards at me if I'm wrong.

The D90 it might be called, but at 10-12MP, it will not. I expect around 8MP, and nothing more.

D2x @ 12.4MP? Oh boy. Do the math, we got 5.44 micron pixels here (the 20D is 6.4). Unless Nikon has been dealing with the devil to get a lead over Canon, there's something going on with this spec. What I suspect, is that Nikon is going to use the interpolation routine, much like Fuji has. Either that or the camera is full-frame. Hah. Yeah, I know, fat chance but it could happen. What I think may happen, is you get "true" 8MP image size, but there will be in-camera interpolation to 12MP. Since you won't be interpolating 100% (like the Fuji), your write times should be fairly quick with the appropriate hardware and buffer.

Thom is right on one thing--and that is--the D2x sensor is going to be a surprise.

I do think Nikon will eventually go Full-Frame on their pro-end. They have to. There is much more competition out there in the DSLR market, and simply offering something that does ok, does not cut it anymore because your competitor can do the same--and for less.

I would LOVE to see Nikon give Canon a run for its money. Competition helps everyone. And Kodak/Canon have had this part of the field to themselves way too long.

Nikon's are fine cameras and they have a wonderful system. As I said before, the day I purchased my used D30 I had intended to buy a new D100. There are times I think I should have. I am happy with my Canon system, its an issue of money and I would still be using the D100 instead of having purchased the 10D and selling the D30. *sigh*

I like that it's a CMOS - tried and true technology. Honestly though, I could care less about LBCAST, CMOS, or CCD - whatever works!
