D300

Postby Tommy » Nov Mon 26, 2007 9:35 pm

I picked up a D300 this weekend while I was down south for Thanksgiving. I checked with my old camera store (who usually doesn't keep the latest gear) and they happened to have a few so i couldn't resist.

It seems pretty good so far although I have not had a chance to do any real shooting with it.

It should compliment my D2Hs pretty nicely. I like that camera a lot but sometimes need the extra resolution. They seem like quite the pair :)

Hey Tommy - congrats, and nice to hear from you again. Do you have any samples to share with us? (nudge, nudge!) ;0)

Congrats Tommy, the D300 should be a nice addition! I had a chance to play with one at PPE in October. The D300's viewfinder is bigger than the D2 series cameras (greater magnification), making it easier to see details. Adding the grip will basically give you the same performance, and resolution as a D2xs. Except you get full 12mp @ 8fps as opposed to 6.8mp. Not to mention the new MultiCAM 3500. Let us know how the D300 works for you :)

...if it only were FF... I'd say it's the perfect camera!

Thanks guys.

I will try to post a few pics this weekend. I haven't had much chance to get out and shoot since I got it.

The shop close to me had two D300's in stock and I almost bougt into temptation but I did get to play with one and learned something prety heartbreaking. While I did enjoy the body and AF (wow!), in order to get 14bit RAW files, you need to switch it to the 14 bit mode which then drops your frame rate to 2.5fps! :hs I was very dissapointed!

Sorry - I din't mean to rain on the parade.... but that is cheating! I didn't read anything about that when they were going down the laundry list of impressive features.

No problems. I was aware of that when I bought it.

I am not a machine gunner for the most part. I have the D2Hs for that :)

I had no idea about that and it was honetly shocking to learn. But it's dissapointing because with with the D300's resolution, it'll make a good landscape camera. Naturally one would want 14bit files to work with but with such a reduced framerate it would make bracketing for stuff like HDR images difficult when you're fighting a breeze and subtle moving objects like flowers or tree branches.
