Looks like Nikon has a digital version of their budget N55 film camera coming in the D40. 6MP, $500 with lens.

If only my fiancée was more into photography, I'd get her a D40 for Christmas or whenever it comes out... she'd rather have the whole CSI collection (as do I)

What else can they strip off a DSLR to make it cheaper? Perhaps soon compacts will have an APS-C sized sensor, and fixed lenses, like one of the Sony cameras, but in a compact, pocket size :)

Well - it's got the N55's AF - a 3 point AF sytem & it doesn't have a built in multicam motor at all, so it will only work with AF-S lenses (No AF-D or older.) They removed the top LCD screen, and just about every function we take for granted as a button ON the camera is not IN the menu. It is literally a P&S DSLR.

We just got my pop a D80 yesterday for Christmas. I'm turning over a bunch of old lenses for him.

BTW (OT)- Check out the Battlestar Galactica DVD sets. I just got into it this season (season #3), so I bought season 1 DVD set and am slowly watching it from the beginning... some of the best TV I've seen in a long, long time.

Well since you mentioned it, I'm addicted to BSG as well. Didn't like it at first but loved it after the pilot movie.

D40 should be a great niche DSLR.

My primary reservation about the D40 is if in fact it is limited to DX lenses. If I were starting out I still would like the flexibility to expand to other Nikon lenses if I chose to without having to buy a new body.

Frank, I believe you can use any lens, DX or regular, as long as they are of the AF-S kind: they have built-in motors. Actually, my single DX lens isn't AF-S, the 10.5mm fisheye doen't have a built-in motor, so that wouldn't work on the D40.

Alberto is correct, it will work only with AFS lenses as the body ain't go no AF motor. This hopefully means Nikon will be updating more of their older glass (read prime lenses) to AFS.

LOL - does one really need AF on a fisheye? Just set the distance manually and your set. I reraly even AF my 10.5mm because it's usually only accurate on the center AF point and even than not all the time because Nikon's AF points are so big.

It just dawned on me, if that's the way of the future, AF-D has gone the way of AI and AI-S... "manual focus" AF-D lenses. At least they should work with the metering, no? No new info on this? Not that I'm buying one, but maybe I could eventually get one for someone
