Well, my 18-70 DX lens died. The zoom is hanging up severely. I can't zoom below 24mm, the zoom catches at the 35mm and 50mm marks, and there is a piece of pink/lavendar iridecent ring visible through the front element. I spoke with Nikon support today and am planning on sending it off UPS(to Melville) today with all the things required. Good thing Nikon lenses have a 5 year warranty. We shall see how long it takes to get back. Untill then I will be stuck with only the 70-300G lens. Guess its time to whip out the old E-10 again for everything under 105mm.

Sorry to hear about your lens John, but the folks at Melville are very good - at least that's been my experience since 2003 when I went Nikon digital

And yeah, that five year warranty is great! :giddy

You should do ok with sending it out before the holiday season.

Melville will take care of you. The problem is that when you send in a lens like that, it doesn't get priority service like their pro lenses do. I've sent in my 17-35/2.8 and had it back in a week. It shouldn't take too long though. If the damage is bad, then they may just send you another one.

What happened to it? Did it just break, or was their some catalyst?

John was talking about getting the 17-35 and the 18-70 got jealous and threw a temper tantrum.

It just started getting a small catch in it, and the next day it wouldnt move without much jiggeling. Like something got jammed in there or a gear just disintegrated or something.

Ok, here is what I found out from Nikon.

They recieved my lens Thursday, put it in work Friday.
It is a Moderate Repair with Major Parts Replacement.
The rep I talked to on the phone said that it takes between 7-10 business days. I am sure that is a typical answer. I cant imagine it taking 7-10 days to work on a lens. It is astounding to me that they didn't e-mail, snail mail or call after they recieved the package. Is this typical of Nikon?

They usually send out a snail-mail in a nice white NIKON envelope with an invoice for $0.00 that you have to reply to via their website or phone.
