Update On DVD (and HD DVD) Reviews

September 12th, 2007 at 11:05 pm (DigitalDingus Reviews)

Due to the rather elaborate packaging of DVDs lately, box sets, etc., I have decided to conduct the DVD reviews which will include a breakdown of features. This won’t happen for all movie reviews, however.

HD DVD reviews will begin probably around the holidays. I am still working on obtaining an HD DVD player and supposedly an HD-A35 from Toshiba is likely, but this is not in stone just yet.

Where possible, the DVD and HD DVD reviews will have as many images as possible of the packaging and the disc itself. I’ve noticed many DVD reviews online don’t have enough.

Grid.org closes its doors…

April 30th, 2007 at 10:41 pm (DigitalDingus Main)

Just a little tidbit. As of April 27, 2007, Grid.org closed its forums and crunching for various projects has now ended. The announcement was only a few days before the actual closing, and I have to admit the management of UD was below my expectations. In any case, I hope my 933,000 or so points and 2,560 WU’s processed over the last several years has done a little bit to help fight cancer and other diseases.

Panasonic TH-50PH9UK 50″ Plasma Television, DVD Reviews, et al…

April 30th, 2007 at 10:35 pm (DigitalDingus Reviews)

I’ve been a little scarce over the last few months as a few personal things have taken much of my time. However, the DigitalDingus website has been quietly working on a few things, regardless. One of them is expanding the site to include DVD reviews. These reviews will not be typical DVD reviews. They will be reviewed solely on the movie and it’s audio and video quality. Extras? Sorry, no review on those. Features? Nope. I realize many are excited about DVD extras, features, documentaries on the DVD, etc., but this is really a joke and the movie labels are laughing all the way to the bank, so I won’t be a part of it. What DigitalDingus will focus on is solely the movie content of the DVD–nothing else.

Oh yeah. I have obtained a Panasonic TH-50PH9UK 50″ Plasma Television which will be used for the DVD reviews (some DVD reviews are already online but not “indexed” by Google) from here on out.

The DVD players used will currently be two popular brands. One is significantly older, and the other is fairly recent–Philips DVDP642 and the Panasonic DVD-F87K. I’m debating HD-DVD / Blu-Ray reviews but a company will have to come forward because I don’t necessarily want to review these just yet. A possible 3rd DVD player, the Philips DVP5960. The reason these DVD players are mentioned is because of their highly-affordable price. The Oppo 970HD and the Helios X3000 could be making their way to DigitalDingus DVD reviews in the near future as well.

The Panasonic TH-50PH9UK 50″ review will be done within a month or two. I expect it to be a great review for those considering plasma televisions. In fact, I was once an LCD-Only person but just started to observe the accomplishments of the plasma industry, and it has significantly changed for the better.

Currently, DigitalDingus is a bit behind in reviews and usually, a review comes out every week or two, but over the last few months, this just couldn’t happen. However, things are getting better and more reviews will be popping up.

For those who happen to come across the DD Blog, I appreciate your viewership and from what I can tell, DigitalDingus is still growing in popularity–even without new reviews.

Honestech VHS to DVD 3.0

January 29th, 2007 at 11:15 pm (DigitalDingus Reviews)

I received Honestech’s latest VHS conversion package, VHS to DVD 3.0. Many new features, including dual-layer support, adding music, and PSP and iPod friendly video. But what I really found intriguing, was the little capture device. This sucker is small, and most certainly compact, which is rare in today’s video capture devices. I was also surprised to see the little bugger even has an S-Video input, in addition to the typical composite inputs. I think this is going to be a pretty slick device. But, I’ll have to hold my tongue further until I use the software and actually convert some older VHS tapes.

I’ll see if I can get some preliminary product shots online.

Panasonic DVD-F87K - 5-Disc Progressive Scan DVD

January 11th, 2007 at 9:11 pm (DigitalDingus Reviews)

It will probably be a little while before I review this DVD Changer, but for those who read the DigitalDingus Blog, I highly recommend you buy one. Period. It’s that good. And I think it is a very under-reviewed player currently out there. I managed to get a good deal on one when Buy.com (I hear shouts of horror and frustration but bear with me) had their $20 off $50 deal, so I did pretty good.

Suffice it to say, the DVD-F87K (or the F87S if you like the silver finish) has great sound via the Digital Audio Coax (wish it had optical though) and Disc-To-Disc times are impressive. Video quality is also very good, just coming out of the S-Video jack (yes, it does have component outs but I don’t have an HDTV yet–sorry, but I’m carefully choosing one!). I also would have preferred a time display on the player versus having to press “display” on the remote and having it show up on the television. Anyway, until I get a review out and online, go ahead and buy one. I usually don’t say this so quickly but I’ve been using it for about 3 weeks now and it’s been working great.

CES 2007 Notes

December 29th, 2006 at 11:35 am (DigitalDingus Main)

The Consumer Electronics Show for 2007 is just around the corner and DigitalDingus will be posting several news releases so if you’ve subscribed via RSS, you will be receiving more than usual. DigitalDingus is not in the habit of sending you RSS updates everyday, or even by the minute because I understand the headaches of subscribing to multiple RSS services. So, expect an update every few days or even once a week with all the pertinent links within one RSS update.

In before November is archived!

November 30th, 2006 at 11:37 pm (DigitalDingus Reviews)

Well, another month is just about gone and DigitalDingus is gradually forming a viewership base that is respectable. Some people have asked who is behind DigitalDingus, and I reply it is myself only except for a few reviews that long-time DD members contribute. That’s how I like it. I notice many sites recruit just about anyone to write up a review. Well, this is why DD is only at 54 reviews. I hope to eventually conduct more reviews and put them out on a regular basis. It is difficult. While I have many companies contacting me, I also reach out to them. For example, I have a few companies most people haven’t heard of who I hope to get on board in January or February 2007. There are some great products out there most people overlook because they are only shopping the sites they recieve emails from.
So, whoever reads this blog, I appreciate your reading this and other content on my site. December should be a great month for reviews as I have some exciting products lined up.

Belkin 1500VA UPS F6C1500-TW-RK

November 26th, 2006 at 1:52 pm (DigitalDingus Reviews)

I happened to order one of these over the holiday weekend and decided I would conduct a review on it for other potential buyers. The Belkin 1500VA UPS F6C1500-TW-RK supports 8 outlets which are all protected. Some UPS units only have 4 protected and an additional 4 which are not. Which is one of the reasons why I decided to buy this unit. Why have outlets in the back of a UPS if they are not going to be protected?

This review is FINALLY done.

Canon iP1700

November 20th, 2006 at 1:39 am (DigitalDingus Reviews)

Well, my Epson 890 decided to give me headaches (meaning the pins got stuck on a genuine Epson cartridge no less), so I decided to pick up a Canon iP1700 at a very affordable price. We’ll see how it performs in the future. I wasn’t going to include this as a review per se but I figured what the heck.

XFX GeForce 7950GT ExTreme (570 MHz) 512MB

November 8th, 2006 at 1:57 pm (DigitalDingus Reviews)

DigitalDingus has received an XFX GeForce 7950GT ExTreme (570 MHz) 512MB to use and abuse for reviews. Yes, the 8800 GTX has been announced today, but in case you don’t want to mortgage your home, a low-profile 7950GT with moderate overclocking, just might be the choice for you. Stay tuned for a review…
