AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 200-400mm f/4G IF-ED

Will anyone actually be able to buy this ~$8K glass monster? I'm not sure, but it will be amusing to see who does. A 200-400mm on a D-series camera would make it an effective 300-600mm f/4.0 lens. Wow. Attach an AF-S TC 1.4x, and it will become a 420-840mm lens (adding 1 stop). And if you're brave enough, you could even add an AF-S 2.0x TC, which would make the beast a 600-1200mm lens (adding 2 stops). Since the lens is VR, the amount of stops added, is negated, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

Looking at the bigger picture, the 200-400 VR is probably the cheapest 1200mm lens you can buy. I expect Nikon to eventually lower the $8,200 pricetag by about $1000 or less. The 200-400 VR is simply an awesome lens for those who are into wildlife photos and for obvious reasons, cannot get close enough due to the animal running away (or just opposite). This is also a perfect lens for any situation where distance is a good thing.

In case you're wondering if you could tote this thing around with your camera, you would most likely suffer a ruptured disc (or more) in your spine. Lugging around almost 7 and a half pounds (with protective glass), NOT including the camera's own weight, is certainly going to require a tripod (or at least a monopod).
